Goat on the Go: Scout’s Adventure Day Is Here

Goat on the Go: Scout's Adventure Day Is Here

It is Scout's birthday, and he has five big adventures on his list

If you remember the end of Scout's Rainy Day, you might recall that our little goat was already dreaming ahead to his birthday, imagining balloons and streamers and carrot cake with extra frosting. Well, the day has finally arrived. Goat on the Go: Scout's Adventure Day is here, and it is Scout's biggest day yet.

What the Book Is About

It is Scout's birthday, and he has five adventures on his list. With a big imagination and a farm full of friends, this little goat has one exciting day ahead of him.

With his list in hoof and his friends by his side, Scout is ready to ride a tractor, hunt for pirate treasure, blast off to the moon, swoop in to save the day, and bake something special. One by one, his birthday adventures come to life. It is the kind of day a child dreams up when anything feels possible, which is to say, the very best kind of day.

The One Little Problem

But there is just one little problem. Penelope the pig thinks she is too small for all those big adventures.

If you have ever watched a child hang back because they felt too little, too new, or too unsure, you will recognize Penelope right away. She wants to belong in the fun, but the fun looks too big for someone her size. That quiet worry sits at the heart of this story.

The Last Adventure

Here is the turn I love most. Scout's list is not finished yet. There is still one adventure left. And it just might be the one that is exactly right for Penelope.

I will not give away how it unfolds. But I will say that this is a story about making sure there is a place in the adventure for everyone, even the smallest friend who was certain there was not. That is the kind of ending I always want to write.

More Than a Birthday Story

On the surface, Scout's Adventure Day is a joyful romp through tractors, pirates, the moon, superheroes, and cake. Underneath, it is about imagination, friendship, and belonging. It celebrates the enormous worlds children build out of an ordinary afternoon, and it gently insists that no one is too small to be part of them.

My nursing background keeps me attuned to the moments when a child feels left out or overlooked. Penelope's worry is a feeling I have seen on real faces many times. Giving her a just right place in the story is my way of telling every small reader that there is one for them too.

The Story Behind the Story

This book began with that small hint at the end of Scout's Rainy Day, when Scout was already dreaming about his birthday. I loved the idea of a day so full of imagination that an ordinary farm could become a pirate cove, a rocket launch, and a superhero rescue all before dinner. That is exactly how birthdays feel when you are small.

But a day built entirely around one character's fun needed a heart, and Penelope gave it one. The moment I imagined a little friend convinced she was too small to belong, I knew what the story was really about. Not just five adventures, but making sure the smallest friend found her place in them.

The Illustrations

Once again, the wonderful Cosette Alcalde has brought Scout and his friends to life. Her illustrations carry so much warmth and personality, and she captures the pure delight of imaginative play in a way words alone never could. The tractor, the pirate treasure, the trip to the moon, each one glows with the joy a child brings to make believe.

Who It Is For

Goat on the Go: Scout's Adventure Day is written for children ages three to seven, and it is made for reading aloud. It is perfect for preschool, pre-K, kindergarten, and early elementary readers, for kids who love goats and farm animals and tractors and pirates and astronauts and superheroes, and for anyone who loves a good birthday story about friendship, imagination, kindness, and belonging. It makes a lovely birthday gift and a happy addition to any classroom or home library.

If your family has followed Scout from his muddy day to his delicious day to his rainy day, this feels like a celebration you have earned alongside him. And if this is your first time meeting Scout, his birthday is a wonderful place to start. You do not need to have read the others to fall right into the fun.

One birthday. Five big adventures. A farm full of friends. I am so glad Scout's special day is finally here, and I cannot wait for your little readers to celebrate it with him.
