The newest Goat on the Go adventure is here, and it's all about turning disappointment into joy
I am absolutely thrilled to finally share some exciting news with you. The third book in the Goat on the Go series is here, and I honestly think it might be my favorite Scout adventure yet.
Goat on the Go: Scout's Rainy Day has arrived, and I cannot wait for you to meet this story.
The Story Behind the Story
If you've been following Scout's adventures, you know our curious little goat has a knack for finding excitement wherever he goes. In Scout's Muddy Day, he explored the farm and discovered that being yourself is the best thing you can be. In Scout's Delicious Day, he followed his nose on a tasty quest that took him all the way into town.
But Scout's Rainy Day is different. This time, Scout doesn't go looking for adventure. Adventure finds him in the most unexpected way.
When Everything Goes Wrong
The story begins with pure excitement. Stephens Farm is buzzing because Farmer Ray is taking the animals to the County Fair. Scout is bouncing on hay bales, barely able to contain himself. His buddy Pickles tells him about the games, the rides that spin round and round, the sweet treats that make you "MOOOOO for more."
Scout can hardly stand it. "This is going to be AMAZING!" he bleats.
And then? BOOM! CRACK! A thunderstorm sweeps in, rain pouring down fast and loud. Farmer Ray hurries everyone into the barn with three words that break Scout's heart: "No fair today."
The Big Feelings
Here's where this story does something I'm really proud of. We don't skip over Scout's disappointment. We sit with it.
Scout's face scrunches. A grumpy feeling rumbles in his belly. He shakes off the rain, stomps his hooves hard, and huffs "This is not fair!" He even kicks over a basket of apples.
Then he plops down on a hay bale and lets out a big SIGH.
Sound familiar? If you've ever watched a child deal with disappointment, you'll recognize every single moment.
The Turn
But here's where the magic happens. While Scout is sitting with his big feelings, Luna the farm dog settles beside him and lays her head gently on his shoulder. And then Scout hears something unexpected: laughter echoing through the barn.
His friends haven't given up on having fun. They've just found a different kind of fun. Hazel the Highland cow is tossing corn cobs into milk pails. Odin the horse is pulling a wagon around in circles with Pinky and Pearl the pigs squealing "Faster, Odin! Faster!" Pickles is bobbing for apples in a big wooden tub.
Scout's frown melts away as he watches his friends laugh and play. And then something wonderful happens: he doesn't just join in. He creates.
Scout stacks milk pails and invents a pumpkin bowling game. He organizes a race. He turns the barn into their very own County Fair.
"This turned into the BEST rainy day ever!" Scout exclaims at the end, wearing a wreath of golden sunflowers and pumpkin vines that Luna gave him as a prize.
Why This Story Matters
Every child will face moments when plans fall apart. Birthday parties get cancelled. Trips get postponed. Playdates fall through. The thing they were SO excited about suddenly isn't happening.
What do we do with that disappointment?
Scout's Rainy Day doesn't pretend the disappointment doesn't hurt. But it shows kids that with imagination, friendship, and a little flexibility, something even better might be waiting on the other side.
That's a life skill disguised as a farm adventure.
The Dedication
This book is dedicated to my sister, Becca, whose strength, humor, and talents continue to inspire me every day. If anyone knows how to turn a rainy day into an adventure, it's her.
The Illustrations
Once again, the incredible Cosette Alcalde has brought Scout and his friends to life in the most beautiful way. The expressions on the animals' faces, the cozy warmth of the barn, the joy of their makeshift fair games—every page is a delight.
I particularly love the page where Scout's frown melts away as he watches his friends. You can see the exact moment his heart shifts from disappointment to possibility. That's the kind of visual storytelling that makes picture books so powerful.
A Sneak Peek at What's Next
Sharp-eyed readers will notice something at the end of the book. Pickles mentions that he knows a little goat with a birthday coming up real soon. Scout's eyes light up imagining balloons, streamers, and carrot cake with extra frosting.
Could there be another Scout adventure on the horizon? I'll never tell. (Okay, yes. There might be.)
