Meet Scout, explore the themes, and discover the best ways to share these stories with the kids in your life

Scout the goat has wormed his way into hearts all over the world, and I couldn't be more grateful. If you're new to the series or looking to share these adventures with someone special, this guide covers everything you need to know about the Goat on the Go books.

Meet Scout

Scout is a curious little goat with big blue eyes, unruly hair, and an irresistible urge to explore. He lives on Stephens Farm with his friends, and every day brings a new adventure.

What makes Scout special? He's not perfect. He gets messy. He follows his nose into trouble. He feels big feelings when things don't go his way. In other words, he's exactly like the kids who read about him.

The Books

Book 1: Scout's Muddy Day
The Adventure: When Farmer Ray opens the gate one sunny morning, Scout seizes his chance to explore the entire farm. He splashes in mud puddles with pigs, meets confused Highland cows who can't figure out what he is, dives into the biggest hay pile ever, and races through chickens (getting covered in feathers!). By the end, he's so messy that even his friends don't recognize him. But Luna the farm dog has been watching, and with help from the garden hose, Scout makes it home clean and happy.

The Themes: Curiosity and independence, self-discovery, identity and being yourself, the joy of exploration, friendship

The Signature Moment: The running gag of animals asking "What are you?" until Scout embraces exactly who he is.

Perfect For: Adventurous preschoolers, kids who love getting messy, discussions about exploring safely and being yourself

Book 2: Scout's Delicious Day
The Adventure: Scout's nose catches the wonderful scent of something sweet, and he can't resist following it. This tasty quest takes him beyond Stephens Farm and into the bustling town, where adventures (and a few mishaps) await. Will Scout ever get his hooves on the treat he's chasing? And how will he find his way back home?

The Themes: Curiosity and following your interests, new experiences and adventures, friendship along the way, finding your way home

The Signature Moment: Scout's determination to find the source of that delicious smell, no matter where it leads.

Perfect For: Kids who are curious about the world beyond home, discussions about safe exploration, readers who love a quest narrative

Book 3: Scout's Rainy Day
The Adventure: Scout is bursting with excitement because Farmer Ray is taking the animals to the County Fair. But just as they're about to leave, a thunderstorm sweeps in. "No fair today." Scout stomps, huffs, and sighs with disappointment. But when he hears his friends laughing in the barn, he discovers that with imagination and teamwork, any day can become an adventure. They create their own barn fair with games, races, and prizes, and Scout declares it "the BEST rainy day ever!"

The Themes: Handling disappointment, resilience and adaptability, creativity and imagination, friendship and teamwork, finding joy in unexpected places

The Signature Moment: Scout's transformation from stomping with frustration to standing proudly with a sunflower wreath prize.

Perfect For: Any child who's experienced disappointment, rainy day reading, discussions about flexibility and creativity, SEL curriculum

The Stephens Farm Friends

Part of what makes the series special is the cast of characters Scout interacts with:

Luna: The farm dog who watches over everyone. Patient, kind, and always there when needed.

Pickles: Scout's scruffy old buddy. Wise, experienced, and always ready with a story or a grin.

Odin: The horse with a big heart. Strong, helpful, and loves giving rides.

Hazel: The Highland cow. Friendly and always up for fun.

Humphrey: Another Highland cow, often found alongside Hazel.

Pinky and Pearl: The pigs who squeal with delight at any adventure.

Farmer Ray: The kind farmer who cares for all the animals.

The Illustrator: Cosette Alcalde

Why These Stories Work

I've thought a lot about why Scout resonates with kids, and I think it comes down to a few things:

He's relatable: Scout makes mistakes, has big feelings, and doesn't always get things right. Kids see themselves in him.

He's active: Scout doesn't wait for adventures. He creates them. Kids are empowered by a protagonist who takes action.

He's supported: Scout has friends who help him. He's never alone, even when things go wrong.

He learns without lectures: The stories don't moralize. Scout figures things out through experience, and kids absorb the lessons naturally.

What's Next for Scout?

Without giving too much away, there may be hints about Scout's upcoming birthday at the end of Scout's Rainy Day. A certain little goat might be imagining balloons, streamers, and carrot cake with extra frosting...

Stay tuned.
